What is Acupuncture
and Oriental Medicine?
Acupuncture is a primary therapy used in the practice of Oriental
Medicine. It originated in China 3000 years ago and is a comprehensive
health care system that can effectively treat a variety of conditions.
Other modalities used
in Oriental Medicine include Chinese Herbology, Bodywork and Dietary
Therapy. These therapies work with the vital energy found in all
living things called Qi. Qi flows through specific pathways in the
body called meridians. Each meridian is associated with a particular
physiological system and internal organ. Pain and disease are caused
by the blockage or imbalance of the flow of Qi in the meridians.
Acupuncture and the other modalities just mentioned are used to
correct the flow of Qi and return the body to a better state of
health.
What is an acupuncture
treatment like? Acupuncture involves the placing of very
fine, hair-thin needles into specific points on the body which correspond
to the muscles, nerves and organs. Each treatment is tailored to
the individual patient’s needs. In most cases, the patient
experiences little or no discomfort when the needle is inserted.
Some patients experience
a feeling of warmth, tingling or pressure after a needle is inserted
while some patients experience no sensation at all. Following a
treatment, the patient usually feels calm and relaxed and experiences
a heightened sense of well being. Each treatment lasts about an
hour.
Is Acupuncture
safe? It is extremely safe with a very low incidence of
side effects when performed by a qualified practitioner using pre-sterilized,
disposable needles.
According to the World
Health Organization, Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine are effective
in treating a variety of conditions and disorders including: Respiratory,
Gastro Intestinal, Urogenital, Gynecological, Musculoskeletal and
Neurological, Sleep and Stress, Circulatory, and is a supportive
therapy for many other chronic and debilitating disorders including
cancer.
